Event

Die Spinnräder surren!

Description

This Sunday, 25 June 2023, from 1 pm, people from the wider area will meet in the Stöffel Park to pursue their hobby of spinning wool by spindle or spinning wheel. Anyone who would like to take part is welcome to get in touch. And interested visitors to the Stöffel Park are invited to join in and have a chat. For children there will be a small craft activity all about wool!

Spinning is a sociable affair

Handicraft will probably always retain its fascination. It creates something - very individual and personal. In the past, work was done on site and very sustainably. Trousers, shirts, coats and shawls were not imported, but made from flax or sheep's wool. Of course, this required spindles or spinning wheels. In the winter months, people met in the evenings to spin wool or flax. Large quantities were needed to weave flax bed sheets, for example. This was hard work that was sweetened by conviviality: People met in the spinning rooms to work together, and all kinds of stories were told - perhaps even some spinning. Men also joined in, and from time to time there was a "flirtation"...

Ancient work - Of spinning goddesses

The "spinners" are in good company. In mythology, spinning has a special meaning: In Greek mythology there are the Moirs, who as spinners spin the human thread of life. In Germanic mythology there are the Norns: three goddesses spin the thread of human life. The Wyrd is the great fabric that holds the world (of which the individual human being was seen as a part) together - today some would choose the term "matrix" for it. Urd, Verdandi and Skuld are their names, and each is assigned one of the three basic colours of life: White, Red and Black. These three colours represent the thread of destiny that the Norns spin for human beings, synonymous with interlocking, the constant interconnectedness of yesterday, today and tomorrow, or body, soul and spirit. Perhaps the weaving patterns were so popular as decoration on utilitarian and artistic objects because they symbolised the interconnectedness of all being. So who knows what else the spinners influence unnoticed when they spin the thread in the Stöffel Park?
