Historical guided tour

How about a cultural guided tour?

Set amidst forests and fields of grain, high on the basalt mountains of the Westerwald, the town of Hachenburg boasts 800 years of eventful history. Over the centuries, countless little stories and anecdotes have been told within the town walls. Some have been forgotten, others have been passed down, and a few are told to visitors during our delightful historical guided tour.

Explore Hachenburg, experience history

On this historical guided tour, you’ll walk in the footsteps of the former counts and princes who lived here and learn about a once flourishing trading town and the devastating fires of the mid-17th century. The 90-minute guided tour will reveal some of the most charming sights in the Westerwald and the cultural treasures of the Lion Town. From the Old Market Square to the castle gardens of the Baroque Hachenburg Castle, stories are brought to life in the places they actually happened by our enthusiastic and imaginative guides – all in the original Westerwald dialect.

HuiWäller? Allemol!

This historical guided tour is somewhat unconventional, or as they say in Hachenburg, “annerschder”.
To outsiders, the Westerwald dialect may sound strange, but it has a long history and an authentic warmth. “Dejis”, “Schmiesjes” and “Näibauer” aren’t types of Dutch sandwich spread, they’re the medieval house names of Hachenburg’s inhabitants. And “Sechsourens” isn’t one of these old names, but the formerly commonplace ritual of drinking schnapps at six o’clock in the evening.
The dialect of the Westerwald, affectionately known as Wäller-Platt, is heavily interwoven with Hachenburg’s history, emerging from the everyday life of the Westerwalders among the old half-timbered façades, and resulting in vocabulary that has been used by generations ever since. We’d love to tell you more, but the earthy nature of the historical guided tour is something you have to experience for yourself.

The Wäller anecdotes and stories are relics from days gone by. To hear them, book your place on our historical guided tour online using the booking form below.
