Fantastic nature trails – Kroppacher Schweiz

As the name suggests, the landscape of Kroppacher Schweiz looks very much like that of our neighbour’s Alpine mountains. Unspoilt landscapes are criss-crossed with exciting hiking trails of all levels of difficulty. Packed with cultural experiences, Kroppacher Schweiz is the perfect meeting point for nature and culture lovers. The Naturpfad Weltende (”End of the World”) nature trail is a prime example, offering lots of fun and adventure. Via paths cut out of the rocks, the circular route culminates in the heart of Kroppacher Schweiz and rewards hikers with a breathtaking view. Those who want something less challenging can take the path to the “Deutsches Eck” (”German Corner”) of the Westerwald, where you can relax and listen to the babbling of the Große Nister and Kleine Nister, which flow together there. The Limbacher Runden trails, with their varied circular routes, will also delight hiking fans of all ages. 

Plateau landscape with scenic lakes – the Westerwälder Seenplatte

Seven lakes, an altitude of 400 m and unlimited ways of enjoying an invigorating hike in this beautiful environment: this popular 7-lake hiking trail takes hikers through dense stretches of forest and ends with a panoramic view of the Westerwälder Seenplatte. Round off your hike on this varied trail with a lakeside coffee at the Dreifelder Weiher or enjoy a pedal boat ride on the 2 km-long lake. Amateur photographers will also get their money’s worth here: the bird sanctuary is home to several rare species, which you might spot on the circular trail around the Dreifelder Weiher.

Day hikes on the WesterwaldSteig – a quality-certified hiking trail

Day hikes on the WesterwaldSteig are perfect for anyone hoping for an active trek. The renowned quality-certified hiking trail is one of the best hiking trails in Germany and has 16 different stages over 235 km with varied scenery that the whole family will love. It’s also one of the Top Trails of Germany – certified by the German Hiking Association – and is put through its paces every three years to make sure it stays that way. No fewer than four of its stages pass through the Hachenburger Westerwald holiday region. These vary in difficulty and also include suitable options for a family hike with children.
