Westerwald Lake District

Detailed description

The Westerwald Lake Plateau is situated on a roughly 400 meter high plateau between Hachenburg, Westerburg, Montabaur, and Dierdorf. The landscape is characterized by seven ponds: Dreifelder Pond, Post Pond, Brinken Pond, Hofmann Pond, Haiden Pond, House Pond, and Wölferlinger Pond. Originally, the waters were created in the 12th century for fish farming and have developed over time into a popular nature and recreation area. Today, the lake plateau combines recreational opportunities with a sensitive natural environment that provides habitat for many species of animals and plants. Especially bird enthusiasts will find joy here, as numerous waterfowl and rare species can be observed around the ponds. Hiking trails, such as the well-known 7 Pond Hiking Trail, lead through forests, along calm shores, and to beautiful viewpoints. Cyclists and families also find suitable routes and opportunities for relaxing outings around the lakes. In summer, Dreifelder Pond and Post Pond offer opportunities for swimming, pedal boating, or simply lingering by the water. Despite their popularity, the Westerwald Lake Plateau remains pleasantly quiet and close to nature in many places. Those visiting the Hachenburger Westerwald will discover a landscape that is authentic, diverse, and refreshing.
