Friedrichstraße or ‘Owergass’

Brief description

The Friedrichstraße - also affectionately called “Owergass” by the people of Hachenburg - is one of the oldest streets in the historic old town. Especially the well-preserved half-timbered houses give the alley its cozy and original character. Small details, narrow passages, and the evolved buildings tell a lot about the former Hachenburg. Away from the busier squares, the Owergass often feels a bit calmer and invites you to take a relaxed stroll. Those who wander through the city center will discover here an authentic part of the Hachenburg Westerwald.

Detailed description

The Friedrichstraße, affectionately called "Owergass" in the Westerwald dialect, is one of the oldest street sections in the Hachenburg city center. Together with the Old Market and the Wilhelmstraße, it formed a major traffic axis of the city as early as the Middle Ages. Even today, numerous half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries shape the street scene and give the alley its historical character. Narrow passages, small squares, and lovingly preserved façades remind one of the developed cityscape of past centuries. Particularly striking is the quiet and somewhat hidden atmosphere, which clearly differs from the larger squares of the historical old town. Small shops and historic buildings additionally give the Owergass an individual charm. Those who walk attentively through the street will repeatedly discover small architectural details and traces of the city's history. Especially on warm summer days, the alley shows its particularly atmospheric side. The Friedrichstraße is an authentic part of the historical old town, whose charm lies in its understated nature. Together with the castle, Old Market, and the surrounding alleys, the Owergass is one of the places that make a walk through Hachenburg particularly varied.
