Cultural discoveries along the hiking trails in the Westerwald
Experience history - discover culture - hiking with depth
The Westerwald combines scenic diversity with a rich cultural heritage.
Westerwald, 28.10.2025. The Westerwald not only impresses with its natural and scenic diversity, but also with its rich cultural heritage. Along the certified hiking trails, you can discover places steeped in history, impressive buildings and spiritual sites that combine past and present.
Herborn - half-timbered town with over 1000 years of history
Herborn impresses with a cohesive historic townscape and numerous half-timbered houses that preserve the splendor of the former trading and university town. Striking buildings such as the old dye works, the oldest residential building from 1445 and the "Haus Bast" on the Kornmarkt characterize the old town as well as the remains of the town wall with its gates and towers. The town is the starting point of the first stage of the WesterwaldSteig and the Kleiner Wällers Hessentagswanderweg. Perfect for experiencing cultural history on foot.
Marienstatt Monastery - experience spirituality and history
Founded in 1212, the Cistercian abbey of Marienstatt is considered one of the most important spiritual and cultural centers of the Westerwald. The first Gothic church on the right bank of the Rhine impresses with its ornate architecture, historic choir stalls and the famous "Mother of Sorrows". Nestled in baroque gardens with its own brewery and beer garden, the monastery is located on the 9th stage of the WesterwaldSteig and the 7th stage of the Druidensteig. A place where history, faith and enjoyment come together.
Daaden and Friedewald - Baroque splendor and castle romance
The 4th stage of the Druidensteig connects two cultural and historical highlights: the baroque church in Daaden with its imposing organ and Friedewald Castle, the main building of which was erected around 1580 by Count Heinrich IV zu Sayn. Hikers can experience a symbiosis of culture, architecture and nature between the half-timbered buildings and the castle park.
Waldbreitbach - monastery mountain with a sensory experience
The St. Marienhaus monastery on the Klosterberg in Waldbreitbach is a place of tranquillity and inspiration. The Bible garden and the Creation Trail invite visitors to experience faith and nature in harmony. The facility is located on the Wiedweg (stage 7) and on the Wäller Tour Klosterweg, which is a
circular route offering insights into spirituality, nature and the cultural heritage of the Wiedtal valley.
Experience culture, enjoy nature
Whether sacred places, historic old towns or baroque architecture, the combination of cultural heritage and certified hiking trails makes the Westerwald a region of discovery. The carefully maintained trails stand for quality, lasting experiences and authentic encounters with history and landscape.
