Important information on the route of the WesterwaldSteig around Hachenburg

Due to extensive construction work on stage 8 of the WesterwaldSteig, there are currently major detour in the area around Hachenburg.

WesterwaldSteig 8th stage: Bad Marienberg - Hachenburg

Deutsche Bahn is currently carrying out construction work on the Hirzbach and Nisterbach railroad overpasses. For safety reasons, the affected section of the WesterwaldSteig is completely closed.

Since June 7, a 6 km long detour has been in place between Stangenrod and Nister. This means that Hachenburg can no longer be reached as a stage destination for stage 8. The detour is marked on site with signs and a green "W" on a yellow background.

The closure is expected to last until the beginning of 2026. The exact detour route for the tour can be viewed in the Rhineland-Palatinate tour planner at https://www.tourenplaner-rheinland-pfalz.de/de/tour/wanderung/westerwaldsteig-08.-etappe-bad-marienberg-hachenburg-ost-west-/1491571/#dmdtab=oax-tab7.

How to continue to reach Hachenburg

Despite the restrictions, Hachenburg remains accessible for hikers:

  • Arrival via stage 8: Hikers follow the detour to Nister, then hike on the main trail to Nistermühle and from there use the detour to Hachenburg.

  • Departure from Hachenburg: A return hike on stage 8 to Bad Marienberg is currently not possible. If you would like to continue hiking from Hachenburg, use the described detour via Nistermühle and then follow the main trail towards Limbach.

As soon as the work on the B 414 has been completed, Hachenburg will once again be directly accessible via the small Holzbach gorge. The temporary alternative route will then be removed.

Important information for hikers: It is recommended that you follow the signposted detour and check the current status in the Rhineland-Palatinate tour planner before setting off on your hike.
