Just in time for one of the last days of winter before the official start of spring on March 20, the event attracted numerous hiking enthusiasts. Westerwald Touristik-Service, the Westerwald brewery, the Hachenburger Westerwald tourist information office, Typisch Westerwald and the Rhein-Zeitung newspaper jointly organized a varied programme that attracted around 550 participants to Hachenburg and the great outdoors. Many of them even made the long journey, traveling from places such as Olpe, Siegen, Hambach and Weimar.
Great demand and ideal conditions
The event met with great interest: Six of the seven hiking tours on offer were already fully booked two weeks before the new date. Up to 150 participants took part in the seventh, unguided hike on the "Kleiner Wäller Löwenspur blau" trail, praising the excellent markings and signposting in particular. New to the program were special family hikes, which were very well received. The subsequent face painting for children was also very popular.
The weather was at its best: while temperatures were still frosty in the morning, bright sunshine accompanied the hikers throughout the day. All tours started and ended on the grounds of the Westerwald brewery. The careful selection of routes by Rainer Lemmer was very well received, as was the dedicated preparation of the hiking guides, who tested their tours themselves in advance.
Focus on culinary delights and information
After the hikes, participants were able to fortify themselves with a hearty potato soup and enjoy refreshing drinks from the Hachenburg brewery. Many took advantage of the sunny weather to enjoy their meal at the numerous outdoor tables provided, while cozy seating was also available inside. The program was complemented by informative information stands from the Westerwald Touristik-Service, the Westerwald-Verein e. V., the Hachenburg Tourist Information Office and the "Wir Westerwälder" initiative.
Positive conclusion from the organizers
The organizers were extremely satisfied with how the event went. The new registration system in particular received a lot of praise: cancellations were uncomplicated and possible at short notice, while check-in also went smoothly.
Outlook for further hiking highlights
The success of this year's RZ Winter Hiking Day once again underlines the attractiveness of the Westerwald as a hiking region. District Administrator Dr. Peter Enders, who took part in the hike himself, was delighted: "The RZ Winter Hiking Day is a wonderful example of how nature experience, community and exercise can be combined. I am delighted to see how much interest there is in such events in our region." One participant summed it up: "The great organization and the perfectly marked routes made the event a wonderful experience". The organizers were also enthusiastic: "The great interest confirms our commitment to hiking tourism in the Westerwald," said Katrin Cramer from Westerwald Touristik-Service. The organizers would like to thank all participants and partners and look forward to the next edition of this popular event. In addition, another highlight for hiking enthusiasts has already been announced: on September 21, 2025, the "Wäller Spendenwanderung" will take place in cooperation with the Sparkassen Westerwald-Sieg and Neuwied. This invites you to discover the beauty of the region and support a good cause at the same time.
