Successful RZ Winter Hiking Day 2026 inspires hiking enthusiasts in the Hachenburg Westerwald

Westerwald, 09.03.2026. Yesterday, Sunday, Hachenburg was once again transformed into a meeting place for hiking enthusiasts from the entire region: around 600 participants accepted the invitation to the RZ Winter Hiking Day and explored the varied landscape around the Lion City in spring-like temperatures. The event was jointly organized by the Rhein-Zeitung newspaper, Westerwald Touristik-Service, the Westerwald brewery, the Hachenburger Westerwald tourist information office and the Typisch Westerwald initiative. The starting and finishing point of all hikes was the Westerwald brewery site.

Varied hiking program for every level

The program offered a wide range of tours: a total of eleven guided hikes and an additional route without a guide were available. The routes ranged in length from a family-friendly 4.5 kilometers to a sporty 20 kilometers along the Große Nister. The varied themed routes focusing on nature, history and regional features were particularly popular. For example, one tour led to springs, historic mines and the Gräbersberg observation tower, while other hikes included highlights such as Marienstatt Abbey, Hachenburg Castle and impressive gorges and viewpoints. Families also got their money's worth: on the specially designed family hike, children could solve puzzles along the way and discover Hachenburg through play. A small surprise awaited them at the finish before many young guests got creative with face painting.

Strong organization and dedicated support

The successful event day was the result of intensive preparation by numerous partners and helpers. A total of 23 motivated volunteer hiking guides accompanied the groups and had carefully tested the routes beforehand. Rainer Lemmer from Typisch Westerwald was responsible for the design and development of the routes, having prepared and optimized the tours together with the hiking guides. The partners involved also worked together in terms of organization: while the Westerwald Touristik-Service and the Tourist-Information Hachenburger Westerwald took care of check-in and looking after guests on site, the Rhein-Zeitung provided additional program items, including a competition.

Culinary delights, brewery experiences and new offers

The Westerwald brewery and its premises provided the ideal setting for the hiking day. In addition to hearty dishes such as potato soup and sausages, coffee, tea and cake as well as non-alcoholic drinks from the brewery were also available. A special highlight this year was the brewery tours offered for the first time after the hikes. The offer was supplemented by the "Little Master Brewers" tour for children, which gave young guests an insight into the world of beer brewing. During the hikes, the brewery's mobile brewery also surprised participants on selected routes with cold drinks, a welcome refreshment along the way.

Nature experience with a view to upcoming hiking highlights

The organizers draw an all-round positive conclusion. The great interest and the high number of participants once again underline the importance of the Westerwald as an attractive hiking region. At the same time, many guests took the opportunity to cast their vote for the Druidensteig, which is currently nominated as "Germany's most beautiful hiking trail 2026" in the multi-day tour category. The RZ Winter Hiking Day once again shows how successfully community events in the region can combine nature experiences, exercise and encounters. The organizers would like to thank all hiking enthusiasts, partners and helpers and are already looking forward to the next edition of the popular hiking format in the Westerwald.
