The Cistercian Abbey of Marienstatt is located a few kilometers from Hachenburg in the Valley of the Nister and is considered one of the most significant monasteries in the Westerwald. The abbey was founded in the year 1212 by monks from the Heisterbach monastery, initially near Neunkhausen and later at its current location. The name "Marienstatt" roughly translates to "Place of Mary" and is based on an old legend about a hawthorn bush blooming in the middle of winter. Particularly impressive is the early Gothic basilica, which is regarded as one of the oldest Gothic churches west of the Rhine. Inside, there are historical choir stalls, a large organ, and the famous image of the Sorrowful Mother of God, among other things. Over many centuries, the abbey shaped the religious and cultural life of the region. Today, Cistercian monks continue to live and work here, and Marienstatt is an open place for visitors, pilgrims, and day-trippers. The grounds also include a brewery, a guesthouse, a gymnasium, a bookstore, and the baroque monastery garden.
