Hiking & walking in the Hachenburg Westerwald

With its varied low mountain range landscape and a multitude of impressive natural beauties, the Hachenburg Westerwald with Kroppacher Schweiz, the Westerwald Lake District and the Upper Wiedtal is one of the most popular hiking areas in Germany. Lush forests, wide plains, wild and romantic streams, impressive high plateaus with spectacular views, a multitude of hiking trails for a wide range of abilities - what more could a hiker's heart desire?

<p>The former commercial center is, picturesquely framed by beautifully restored half-timbered houses, located in the historic town center and is under monument protection. Numerous small shops and restaurants invite you to linger and enjoy the unique setting. Only after the fire of 1439 was the Old Market laid out in the size and form it still has today. On the market fountain, the two-tailed lion sits and watches over the lively hustle and bustle on the marketplace. The lion figure with the double tail, a gift from Count Alexander of Hachenburg to the town (1888), is part of both the Sayn coat of arms and the town's coat of arms.</p>

<p>In sight of the castle lies the Burggarten. Once reserved for the nobility, it is now a small oasis of relaxation for everyone and occasionally a popular place for various cultural events. An impressive old tree population and striking sculptures accompany visitors during their walk. Families can spend time on the beautiful playground and the adjacent mini-golf course.</p>

<p>In the year 1212, the history of the Cistercian Abbey Marienstatt began. Today, the popular pilgrimage site is considered one of the spiritual and cultural centers of the Westerwald. The monks built here one of the oldest Gothic churches in Germany. In 1747 the baroque convent building was completed. On site, there is the private high school of the abbey, the guesthouse, the book and art shop as well as the abbey's own brewery. Particularly remarkable are the beautiful garden grounds and the old basilica, the centerpiece of the abbey.</p>
