Description

Start at the Wirges station and cycle northeast into Bahnhofstraße. The Westerwald Cathedral impresses in Wirges, as does the glassblower-potter fountain sculpture. A short detour leads to the Tonberg Museum in Siershahn.

The route passes through former mining pits which shaped this area for over 400 years. Admire the history of mining with minerals, ore, and silver, which ceased completely only after World War II. In Staudt, clay is mined and processed into ceramics in a large factory.

Enjoy the picturesque nature of the Westerwald on the bike ride. The route passes through protected areas for animals and flora-fauna habitats that underline the beauty of this region.

Directions

Start at the Wirges station, head northeast into Bahnhofstraße. Turn left to the Westerwald Cathedral. Continue the route through Siershahn, pass the Leuterod Forest and circle Helferskirchen. Reach Sainerholz, the northernmost and highest point (382 m) of the tour, and head towards Ötzingen. Cycling via Leuterod, follow the forest and reach Moschheim. Cycle southwards to Bannberscheid and Staudt. The route crosses the autobahn 3 several times (overpass) and passes through Dernbach. Then the Martin Luther Straße leads you northwards back to Wirges. After a sharp right turn, cycle northwards back onto Bahnhofstraße.

Safety instructions

Good basic fitness required.

Equipment

Bags and backpacks provide sufficient space for bike transport. The equipment should be distributed on different body and bike parts to prevent discomfort. Suitable clothing protects against weather influences and temperature fluctuations. Tools and repair utensils should not be missing. Orientation aids such as bike maps or GPS devices are important. A small emergency kit is also advisable.

Tips

Plan a visit to Montabaur: The large market with cafés and restaurants as well as the Church of St. Peter in Chains are worth seeing.
