A small viewpoint offers a wonderful view of the peacefully lying quarry lake.
Where once the noisy activity of basalt mining prevailed, today there is a nature oasis: The quarry in the current nature reserve "Schimmerich" was already in use in 1898. From 1913, the basalt deposit was worked by the local company Blecker & Eckhardt from both the Derschener and Friedewälder sides. The Great Depression brought the preliminary end of mining, although the basalt here was of excellent quality. After that, basalt mining on the Derschener side was nearly inactive for almost 30 years. In the mid-1950s, entrepreneur Robert Weid resumed work in a new quarry and mainly quarried water stones for dikes in the Netherlands.Mining there ended in 1960, but on the Friedewälder side it was revived by the Brandt company. The operation was later taken over by the Eiserfeld Stone Works and continued until 1974. About 500 tons basalt were extracted daily and transported with two large dump trucks to the crushing plant on the road from Friedewald to Daaden where the bulk material was crushed into gravel, loaded, and primarily used for road construction. In 1980, the crushing plants were demolished. Remnants of the buildings or foundations of the facility can still be seen on the current premises of Fa. Mudersbach. After the end of mining, the quarry was to be completely renatured by the operator. However, the steep wall of the mining pit could not be sloped due to the border between Derschen and Friedewald. Thus, it remained intact, and over time a small lake formed, quickly becoming a refuge for rare amphibian species and numerous other fauna and flora. Here, the midwife toad and the yellow-bellied toad have made their home.By legal decree on December 8, 1980, the area around the former quarry was designated as a nature reserve named "Schimmerich." It encompasses more than 24 hectares.
