Marienthal

Former Franciscan monastery Marienthal

Brief description

Set in an idyllic landscape

Detailed description

The roots of the former Franciscan monastery date back to the 17th century. The house has been able to maintain its monastic character throughout its turbulent history to this day. Even today, the monastery and the small village still serve as a popular pilgrimage destination.

Well beyond the borders of the region, the Chapel of Grace in the pilgrimage church is known for the venerated image of the “Sorrowful Mother” from the 15th century, as well as the Stations of the Cross, which are beautifully situated on a hill opposite the monastery.
Since the mid-15th century, the monastic village of Marienthal has been a highly visited pilgrimage site. The feast with the candlelight procession takes place on the first Saturday after September 15, the day of remembrance of the sorrows of Mary.
