At the visitor mine Grube Edelstein, guests dive into the working world of former miners and experience authentic insights. The expert-guided tours convey exciting details about everyday life underground at that time. Without artificial staging, the mine relies on a genuine atmosphere and vivid presentation. This original character makes the visit particularly impressive and offers families, history enthusiasts, and nature lovers a rewarding stay.
On the 2nd Sunday of every month, guided tours of the tunnels are conducted without prior registration. Anyone wishing to book a tour outside of these dates should send a request for an appointment along with the number of participants using the contact form at westerwalderleben.de.
A tour lasts about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the curiosity of the participants. The maximum number of people per tour is 10. Stroller and wheelchair accessibility is not available. Walker accessibility must be tested on-site.
Adults are provided with a safety helmet. For children, if possible, a bicycle helmet should be brought along. After heavy rain above ground, there may be larger puddles and dripping eaves on the tunnel floor, so dirt- and moisture-resistant jackets and shoes are advisable. The temperature in the mine is around 10 °C, so warmer clothing is recommended.
Entry is free of charge. Donations are welcome.
The Edelstein mine makes the mining history of the Westerwald vividly experienceable. During a guided tour, visitors go down into the old tunnels, where well-preserved facilities and ore veins tell stories of the everyday life of miners.
