Description

The path is not specially marked. You can follow the signage of the 7-Pond Hiking Trail North Loop.

Discover the realm of the great crested grebes, grey herons, and coots. The Dreifelder Weiher, with its shallow water zones, swamp areas, and wet grassland, provides habitat for rare plants and animal species which can be observed from the circular shoreline path. There are no inclines; the paths are gravelled and walkable in any season. Several information boards explain much of interest about the geology, flora, fauna, the land, and the people. Highlights of this shoreline circular hiking trail are the wooden high seat as well as the bridge in Dreifelden, which offer beautiful views over the lake and the Wied inflow.

Approach

From Hachenburg (north): We leave Hachenburg via Steinebacher Straße. At the town exit, we follow the L292 to Steinebach. In Steinebach, we follow Mittelstraße to the town exit towards Schmidthahn. In Schmidthahn, we follow Weiherstraße and turn right outside the village onto K1 towards Seeburg. A few meters further on the right side, opposite the campsite "Haus am See", there is a parking lot.

From Selters (southwest): We drive via L304 to Freilingen. In Freilingen, we turn left onto Hohe Straße. Behind Freilingen, we turn right onto L303, which we follow for about 2.5 kilometers until we turn left onto K1 and shortly afterward turn right to continue on K1 for about 2.3 km to the parking lot (left side) opposite the campsite "Haus am See".

From Westerburg (east): We leave Westerburg via Langenhahner Straße and at the end turn right onto L288. We follow this road to Rotenhain, where we turn left onto Bahnhofstraße. At the intersection, we turn right onto Hauptstraße which becomes K8. We follow this to Lochum. In Lochum, we turn left onto Alte Poststraße and follow it to the town exit where we continue on L303 via Linden to Dreifelden. In Dreifelden, we turn right at the first intersection onto Kirchstraße towards Schmidthahn. We continue on K2 and after about 1.9 km turn left onto K1. After about 300 m, we reach the parking lot on the right opposite the campsite "Haus am See".

Directions

We start our hike from the parking lot of the campsite "Haus am See" to the left and walk along the shore of the Dreifelder Weiher. After about 1.5 km we leave the shore and walk across meadows to the village of Dreifelden. From there, the path leads us through fairytale-like forests until we discover the Haidenweiher on the left. After about 500 m, we reach our starting point again, the campsite "Haus am See". There are no inclines, so the circular hiking trail is also very suitable for inexperienced hikers.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, functional clothing that protects you from cold and wet or heat and sun.

  • Bring enough fluids. There are not always places to stop for refreshments.

  • Please wear appropriate hiking shoes on the trail that provide sufficient grip even on slippery and steep or rocky and uneven paths.

  • If you feel certain sections of the path are impassable for you, you should avoid them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths can be muddy and slippery.

  • Especially in autumn, be aware that fallen leaves can hide unevenness, roots, stones, or holes on the path. Expect such trail impairments when hiking.

  • Although the path is very well marked throughout, for safety reasons you should always carry a suitable hiking map.

Tips

We take plenty of time for the numerous information boards along the path to learn more about the region.
