Description

Westerwald - adventurous hike

Even before your hike starts, there is a lot to discover in Hachenburg, the pearl of the Westerwald: Among other things, near the path you will find the remarkable landscape museum. The core of the museum is the baroque hunting arsenal of the Counts of Sayn-Hachenburg. The open-air museum shows a farmstead group with buildings relocated here from other places.

You should definitely see the marketplace, affectionately called Alter Markt. Surrounded by beautiful half-timbered houses, the golden double-tailed lion, the city's emblem, stands proud in the center. Discover this and many other beautiful places that Hachenburg offers its guests on a guided tour.

The Erlebnisbrauerei Hachenburg offers its visitors, as the name suggests, a true experience of brewing art. Experience the fascination of brewing beer!

Along the way, a special highlight awaits you: the spectacular panoramic view from the observation tower on Gräbersberg. After climbing 196 steps, you reach the observation platform at a height of 34 meters and, weather permitting, can enjoy views as far as Siebengebirge. The Alpenroder Hut invites you to stop for refreshments here.

Directions

After you have explored the town of Hachenburg or taken the access path from Hachenburg station (blue W on yellow background), your hike begins. You start at the Westerwald Brewery in Hachenburg. From here, the Blue W on white background leads you to your first stage destination in Linden. A gentle ascent takes you out of the town and brings you closer to nature bit by bit. Through forest and fields, you head towards Gräbersberg. Next to the observation tower, gastronomy and a beer garden invite you to stop for a break. Additionally, at this point the Wiedweg intersects with another long-distance hiking trail in the Westerwald, the WesterwaldSteig. More than half of the first stage is now done. You walk on comfortable, quiet paths towards the Wied spring and eventually reach it. The spring, set in natural stone, lies under the root system of a beech tree several hundred years old. Tables and benches offer you the opportunity to rest and absorb the tranquility of this place.

Safety instructions

  • Wear sturdy footwear and weather-appropriate, practical clothing to protect you from cold and wet or heat and sun.
  • Take enough fluids with you. There are not always places to stop for refreshments.
  • Wear suitable hiking boots that provide you with enough support even on slippery, steep, rocky, and uneven paths.
  • If you think certain sections of the route are not passable for you, you should bypass them. Especially in adverse weather conditions, natural paths may have muddy and slippery stretches.
