Wilhelmstraße (pedestrian zone)

Brief description

The Wilhelmstraße, together with the Alten Markt and the Friedrichstraße, formed the main traffic axis of the city in the Middle Ages.

Detailed description

This was a trade route that, crossing the Westerwald, connected the Rhineland with Central Germany. The city wall, with gates and towers, was dismantled between 1820 and 1830 apart from a few remains, but its course can still be roughly recognized, particularly in the layout of the Johann-August-Ring. A section of the old wall can still be found today in the Schwanenpassage.
